Christina Fluegel and PFW Designs Receive Best Project of the Season Award for the Kahler Grand Hotel

Collaborating with PFW Designs, 2nd Ave Lighting has created exquisite, elaborate chandeliers for the major renovation of the Kahler Grand Hotel in Rochester. The hotel is currently undergoing a transformative $50 million renovation. A crucial part of this grand makeover is the installation of two exquisite chandeliers from 2nd Avenue Lighting in the hotel’s two-story lobby, a project designed to honor the hotel’s legacy while embracing contemporary elegance.

“Receiving recognition from 2nd Avenue Lighting as a featured project of the season is a tremendous honor,” explained Javon D. Bea, board representative of Kahler Hospitality Group. “The Kahler Grand Hotel’s lobby renovation, with its beautifully crafted chandeliers, perfectly marries our storied past with a vision for the future. This project is a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to enhance the guest experience while preserving the historic essence of the hotel.”

For the lobby renovation, two grand chandeliers from 2nd Avenue Lighting were specified. These stunning fixtures are prominently installed in the two-story lobby, a space that serves as the heart of the hotel, welcoming guests with a blend of historic grandeur and modern sophistication.

The lighting design was inspired by the desire to honor the Kahler Grand Hotel’s illustrious past while integrating elements that would ensure its continued relevance and appeal in the future. Research into the hotel’s historical lighting fixtures revealed at least two different designs that had previously adorned the lobby. This research informed the new chandeliers’ overall shape and tiered lighting aspects, which pay homage to the hotel’s legacy. The final design features fluted glass cylinder shades and a two-tone finish of black and brass, combining historical references with contemporary aesthetics.

One of the main challenges of this project was deciding which historical elements to incorporate into the new chandelier design. The research revealed varying styles of past fixtures, and not all images provided a complete view of the original designs.

To address this challenge, designers from 2nd Avenue Lighting focused on identifying and integrating similar details from the previous fixtures into the new design. This meticulous approach ensured that the new chandeliers would reflect the historical essence of the hotel while introducing a modern twist that aligns with the overall renovation. The 2nd Ave Design and Engineering Team also worked closely with Christina Fluegel, the CEO and Principal of PFW Designs.
